Before the Ultimate Warrior, there was the Dingo Warrior. But who was the Dingo Warrior, and how did he become the Ultimate Warrior? It's a tale of creative branding, personal identity, and the power of a catchy name. In 1986, the future Hall of Famer left the Universal Wrestling Federation, where he was known as Blade Runner Rock, and joined World Class Championship Wrestling. There he became the Dingo Warrior. The name was born from a combination of creative input and a bit of serendipity. Former World Class referee David Manning recalled that someone pitched the idea of a “wild dog” to match the “wild warrior” concept the promotion had for the larger-than-life powerhouse. Warrior himself offered a different origin story in the 2014 WWE DVD Ultimate Warrior: The Ultimate Collection. After someone remarked that he looked like a warrior, another person entered the dressing room with a puppy that the owner described as a dingo, sparking an idea. Gary Hart, Warrior’s manager in World Class, offered a more detailed account in his 2009 autobiography, Playboy Gary Hart: My Life in Wrestling. His version also explained why a wrestler billed from Queens, New York, had the name of an Australian dog. "I wanted to have two guys who looked like they came from the Bowery in New York City, and name them Dingo and Socko -- simply because I thought they were unusual names that the fans might notice out of curiosity," Hart wrote. When he couldn’t find someone to play Socko, Hart said he gave Warrior both the Dingo and Warrior names. "I figured that since Kerry [Von Erich] was The Modern Day Warrior, and The One Man Gang did a good job as The Halsted Street Warrior, Jim should be named The Dingo Warrior," he wrote. In 1987, Warrior left World Class and joined WWE, where he was soon billed from Parts Unknown. A name change followed, as then-company owner Vince McMahon wasn’t sold on the old branding. "What kind of a warrior is a Dingo Warrior?" McMahon asked himself in the 2005 WWE DVD, The Self-Destruction of the Ultimate Warrior. "That didn’t sound too menacing to me." In the same documentary, longtime WWE executive Bruce Prichard explained that McMahon wanted to distinguish his new star from other wrestlers with "warrior" in their names, including the Road Warriors. After deciding he was more than just another warrior, he became the "Ultimate Warrior," and one of wrestling’s most iconic characters was born. Warrior told a similar story in a 2005 shoot interview with Ringside Collectibles, though he claimed he was the one who came up with the final name while cutting a promo for TV. "They took me down in one of the studio rooms down in the basement, and Vince said, 'We want you [to] do Warrior, but we don’t want Dingo.' And so I got on there, and I said, 'I’m [not] this warrior. I’m not that warrior. I am the Ultimate Warrior.' And that’s how Ultimate Warrior came to be."
